Das Pentathlon Framework für Innovation fügt dem klassischen Entwicklungstrichter mit Ideas, Prioritization und Implementation die Elemente Innovation Strategy und People and Organization hinzu (Mitchell & Goffin, 2010, S. 27). Dadurch entsteht ein Gesamtbild, das einem modernen Verständnis von Innovationsmanagement sehr gut entspricht. Man kann nur erfolgreich sein, wenn alle fünf Disziplinen beachtet werden, wie eben in der Sportart Pentathlon (dt. Fünfkampf). Die einzelnen Arbeitsweisen innerhalb des Frameworks sind durch Goffin und Mitchell (2010) sehr genau beschrieben, dies jedoch in freier Form und nicht als Teil des Frameworks.
Das ganze Framework wird auch im Kontext der Umwelt positioniert. Verschiedene Kräfte, Faktoren und Netzwerke interagieren wechselseitig mit dem Innovationsmanagement der Unternehmung. (Mitchell & Goffin, 2010, S. 28-29)
